Great Wall of China
The Chinese were already familiar with
the techniques of wall building by the time of the spring and autumn
period between the 8th and 5th centuries BC. During
this time and the subsequent warring states period, the states of Qin,
Wei, Zhao, Qi, Han, Yan and Zhongshan all constructed extensive
fortifications to defend their own borders. Built to withstand the attack of
small arms such as swords and spears, these walls were made mostly of stone or
by stamping earth and gravel between board frames.

Construction to create the current 13,170.70 miles of wall continued, on and off, for more than
two millennia. Much of what remains was built during the Ming Dynasty. While
intended to keep out foreign invaders, Genghis Khan demonstrated how even a
wall as great as this had a flaw.
The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications that
were built across the historical northern borders of an ancient Chinese state
and Imperial China as protection against various nomadic groups from Eurasian
steppe. Several walls were built from as early as the 7th century BC, with
selective stretches later joined by Qin Shi Huang (220–206 BC), the
first emperor of China. Little of the Qin wall remains. Later on, many
successive dynasties built and maintained multiple stretches of border walls.
The best-known sections of the wall were built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
The frontier walls built by different dynasties have multiple courses. Collectively, they stretch from Liaodong in the east to Lop Lake in the west, from the present-day Sino-Russian border in the north to Tao River in the south; along an arc that roughly delineates the edge of the Mongolian steppe; spanning 21,196.18 km (13,170.70 mi) in total. And it's almost over 30 million steps to climb the whole sections of the Great Wall. But don't worry, most travelers just experience about 3-hour hiking for 4-6 kilometers, which is about 5,000 steps. Today, the defensive system of the Great Wall is generally recognized as one of the most impressive architectural feats in history.
The Great Wall has a history of over
2,000 years, but now the remaining sections are those that were mostly built in
the Ming Dynasty. Less than
10% of the sections are well-preserved.
There are two ways to get down from the Great Wall of China – the smart way, or the way I took. The bus ride from Beijing is about an hour, depending on which part of the wall you

It has become a space-based myth. The Great Wall of China, frequently billed as the only man-made object visible from space, generally isn't, at least to the unaided eye in low Earth orbit. It certainly isn't visible from the Moon. You can, though, see a lot of other results of human activity. In popular culture claim that the Great Wall can be seen (with the naked eye) from space, with questionable degrees of veracity.

William Edgar Geil, an American traveler,
is the first person who has ever walked the entire Great Wall. In 1908, he and
his team spent five months walking from eastern end Shanhaiguan to western end
Jiayuguan, leaving a large number of precious photos and documentary records.
Dong Yao-hui has spent the last three decades protecting and promoting China's Great Wall. "It was the first time ever for humans to go on an expedition of the entire Great Wall, leaving the first complete set of footprints," recalls Dong, now 62.
There are many signs on Jinshanling watchtowers
showing that “No camping on the Great Wall”. But guards hardly inspect on the
wall if there is no fire signal. If you want to camp up there, it is
recommended to camp on the East
Five-Window Tower as it is a good place to shoot sunset and
sunrise.
