Garlic is a plant in the Allium (onion) family, closely related to onions, shallots, and leeks. It is native to Central Asia and has been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Garlic bulbs, which are the underground part of the plant, are composed of multiple cloves enclosed in a papery, white or pinkish skin.
